Land Heritage Registry Program
A program to recognize private landowners who are interested in stewarding their land for the benefit of current and future generations.
What is the Land Heritage Registry Program?
TLC wishes to recognize landowners who are interested in conserving and stewarding their land. Through a "handshake" agreement, the landowner agrees to conserve his or her land to the best of their ability.
Can I join the Land Heritage Registry Program?
Yes, if your land is in McHenry County and contains:
- Areas of open space which contribute significantly to you community or region. This could include agricultural lands or scenic resources.
- Plants, animals or natural communities typical of the region, including areas of habitat restoration.
How does the program work?
As a participant in the Land Heritage Registry Program, you agree to continue stewardship and conservation of your land. TLC will recognize your efforts with a sign and, based on your interest, can help arrange for a survey of the resources on your property or technical assistance with developing a management plan. Additionally, we ask that you let us know if you plant to sell or transfer the land.
Is this agreement legally binding?
No. This is a voluntary agreement that may be cancelled at any time by the landowner.
Will the general public have access to my land if I join the Land Heritage registry Program?
No. The amount of public access will be determined by you as a private property owner.
Are there other conservation options available through The Land Conservancy?
Yes. You can contact our office at any time to learn about other conservation options, such as conservation easements, which provide for permanent conservation of your land and may result in tax benefits for you as a private landowner.
