SUMMARY:Crowley Oaks Restoration Workday
DESCRIPTION:Join Larry for another restoration adventure at Crowley Oak Woods! Restoration has been occurring on this 80 acre tract since the winter of 2020 and we’re making excellent progress clearing the brush from the highest quality areas of the preserve. We conducted our first prescribed burn here this spring and the ground layer has responded in a really positive way! We’ll be cutting mainly honeysuckle and buckthorn and selectively thinning cherry trees and shagbark hickories to allow more light to reach the understory and encourage native plants and new oaks to grow.\n\nDirections: From the intersection of 173 and 14 in Harvard\, head east on 173 and continue for 3.2 miles. Turn left (west) on Crowley Road\, and continue for 0.2 miles. The site will be to the north\, and you may park along the road. If you’ve got a rugged vehicle\, feel free to drive back on the lane but stop at the end of the lane if ground conditions are moist.\n\nNearest address: 18725 Crowley Rd. SUMMARY:Queen Anne Prairie Cemetery Restoration Workday
DESCRIPTION:Join TLC for our first restoration workday at one of our newest sites\, Queen Anne Prairie Cemetery! TLC recently acquired this property which has a lot of facinating history attached to it. Be sure to check out the article in our latest newsletter for the details! Designated a burial site over one hundred years ago\, this site remains largely undisturbed and is epecially significant due to its remnant plant communities and the intact condition of the plant soil microbiome. However\, like many before it\, this tiny slice of original Illinois prairie experienced heavy enchroachment from several invasive species. Many years ago some native sumac was planted with good intentions but its aggressive nature allowed it to completely take over and now shades out much of the sun loving plant species persisting here. \nFor this workday we’ll focus on removing sumac\, clearing the edges of fallen trees and hauling the debris to a burn pile. \nDirections: From the intersection of route 47 and Charles Rd. head east on Charles Rd. and continue for 0.7 miles. At the traffic circle\, take the 2nd exit to continue on Charles Rd. Continue for 0.7 miles and turn left onto Queen Anne Rd. Continue for 0.3 miles and you’ll see Queen Anne Prairie Cemetery on your left. Continue past the cemetery taking a right onto Pheasant Ln. Pull off to the side of the road to park and walk over to the cemetery. \nNearest address: 2413 N Queen Anne Rd\, Woodstock IL \nPin:https://maps.app.goo.gl/x5YmBArwcyyxQMgR7

SUMMARY:Wolf Oak Woods - Garlic Mustard Pull
DESCRIPTION:Come on back to Wolf Oak and join Pete\, your Fearless Weeder\, for a wonderful Wolf Oak reunion! Rather than a typical brushing workday we’ll be hand pulling garlic mustard that is popping up amongst the spring ephemerals that are blooming. Garlic mustard is an aggressive biennial plant which means it completes its life cycle in 2 years and only sets seed during the second year. It likes to take advantage of the early growing season just like our spring ephemeral natives and which tend to get shaded out by their dense patches that can dominate an understory in a very short amount of time. It’s important to stay on top of GM management and we can use all the hands we can get! Let’s meet in the parking lot and Pete will direct you to your quarry. \nDirections: From the intersection of Rt. 14 and Dean St in Woodstock: head north on Dean St toward US-14 E for 1.1 miles. Turn right onto E South St/U.S. 14 Business Rt. for 0.1 miles and take a left onto S Madison St. Continue for 0.4 miles and turn right onto IL-120 E/McHenry Ave. Continue for 4 miles and take a right to stay on Rt. 120 E. Continue for 1 mile. Parking area for Wolf Oak Woods will be on your left. \nNearest address: 9016 IL Rt 120 Woodstock\, IL \nPin: https://goo.gl/maps/mrRw1hE9ad4zPCQSA

SUMMARY:Pollinator Garden Planting at Thompson Rd. Farm
DESCRIPTION:Native plants help make the world a better place! \nTLC has received a grant from Nicor Gas’ Environmental Stewardship program to plant a pollinator garden at Thompson Road Farm in Woodstock. We have a beautiful selection of native plants\, but could use some extra hands to plant them! \nTLC will pre-drill holes for planting\, so trowels/shovels shouldn’t be necessary. If you’d like to help out\, bring a kneeling pad (if you have one)\, gloves\, and drinking water. It would also be beneficial to wear a hat and sunscreen because we will be working in a sunny area.\n\nPlease register so we can notify you in case of a weather cancellation – or just feel free to wing it and show up! Thank you!\n\nDate: Tuesday\, June 4\, 1:00 p.m. please register here\nLocation: 9502 Thompson Rd. Woodstock (nearest address)\nPin for entrance to property: https://goo.gl/maps/mEMKMdFFKGg1GQoN7\nParking: Enter the site using the gravel driveway. DESCRIPTION:Tryon is nearly 40 acres and made up of primarily wetland and oak woods. Turn onto Oak Hill Drive\, which can be difficult to spot. You can pull over on the side of Oak Hill Drive and we will walk to the site from there. SUMMARY:Thompson Road Farm Restoration Workday
DESCRIPTION:Join Bruce Killips at Thompson Road Farm for a day of woodland restoration! TLC partnered with Bull Valley to purchase and protect this property as a natural area. It’s made up of mostly wet sedge meadow and woodland habitats that are in need of invasive management. The oak woods is roughly 35 acres and heavily infested with buckthorn\, honeysuckle and bittersweet but many precious natives are still holding on beneath the brush.\n\nDirections: From the intersection of Charles Rd. and Greenwood Rd. in Woodstock\, head South on Greenwood Rd. (rt. 120) for 0.0mi. Turn left onto Thompson Rd. and continue for 0.7mi. Turn right onto the dirt path\, which is flagged with pink tape\, just before the big white house and continue along the gravel road (watch for potholes!) past one right bend and one left bend in the road. Continue until you see a picnic table at the 3rd bend and park off to the side.Nearest address: 9505 Thompson Rd Woodstock\, IL\nPin for entrance to property: https://goo.gl/maps/mEMKMdFFKGg1GQoN7\n\nPin for parking area: https://goo.gl/maps/yaxxB1AJGEVj4p4NA\n\nSawyers Welcome! \nAre you an experienced sawyer looking to help out at one of our workdays? Great! \nWe just ask that you demonstrate\, to either myself or Mr. Ducci\, your ability to follow safety procedures when \nfelling and bucking a tree at the start of the workday. All sawyers must bring their own gear \nincluding: saw\, fuel\, bar oil\, chaps\, hearing and eye protection. \nTips to make your workday experience safe/enjoyable: \nBring plenty of water – better to bring too much than too little! \nSturdy boots are best or old tennis shoes will do too \nLeather gloves or gardening gloves\, an extra pair in the winter is a good idea \nLong sleeves/pants – to prevent scrapes and scratches from branches \nHat – to protect your noggin and beautiful hair from flying embers \nSunglasses or eye protection \nFeel free to bring loppers if you’ve got them — be sure to label them
