DESCRIPTION:Join Larry for another restoration adventure at Crowley Oak Woods! Restoration has been occurring on this 80 acre tract since the winter of 2020 and we’re making excellent progress clearing the brush from the highest quality areas of the preserve. We conducted our first prescribed burn here this spring and the ground layer has responded in a really positive way! We’ll be cutting mainly honeysuckle and buckthorn and selectively thinning cherry trees and shagbark hickories to allow more light to reach the understory and encourage native plants and new oaks to grow.\n\nDirections: From the intersection of 173 and 14 in Harvard\, head east on 173 and continue for 3.2 miles. Turn left (west) on Crowley Road\, and continue for 0.2 miles. The site will be to the north\, and you may park along the road. DESCRIPTION:We hope you can join us at Lynda Clayton\, a 13-acre mosaic of sedge meadows\, and marshes\, with some invasive shrubs mixed in. We hope to be able to burn this site in the future but first we need to clear a fire break around the property. Last year\, we teamed up with staff from Aon\, a global professional services firm\, for a workday and tackled a lot of the brush overcrowding one of our borders. Under her thoughtful leadership\, the history and beauty of Irish oaks is finally revealed for everyone to enjoy. Location for this workday is yet to be determined but if it’s not too hot we’ll probably be working to clear the upland near the pond on the west side of the preserve. \nDirections: From Rt. 14 in Harvard\, take Brink St east for 1.7 miles. Turn right (south) onto Schultz Rd and continue for 0.3 miles. Turn left (east) onto Lincoln Rd\, and continue for 0.5 miles. The entrance to the site will be on the right (south) and is a gravel lane between a wooded fencerow and a hayfield. SUMMARY:York Conservation Area Restoration Workday
DESCRIPTION:This small\, 2.5 acre site was donated to The Land Conservancy in 2011. Although small in size\, it’s proximity to a high quality wetland complex which is adjacent to our Tryon Creek Woods site make it an important corridor for wildlife. This parcel was densely wooded with several giant white oaks and many smaller shagbark hickory but is slowly being thinned of weedy tree species with each visit!
