SUMMARY:Cancelled - Wolf Oak Woods Restoration Workday
DESCRIPTION:Cancelled due to muddy conditions \nJoin us for a workday with Pete at Wolf Oak woods in Woodstock! We’ll be working on clearing honeysuckle and buckthorn but we’d also like to clean up some of the many fallen oaks that have come down over the past couple of years. Dead oaks are a beneficial part of woodland so the goal is only to remove enough so that we can get into certain areas with a mower.Pin: https://goo.gl/maps/mrRw1hE9ad4zPCQSA

SUMMARY:Kishwaukee Fen Restoration Workday
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the arrival of autumn through a morning of stewardship at the fen. As the end of the growing season draws closer\, more and more wetland seeds are ripening and ready to gather. \nWe’ll gather the seeds of precious wetland species to return to the ecosystem once they’ve been prepped and mixed. Blazing star\, flat-topped aster\, cowbane\, and more await loving hands to collect and broadcast. \nThe pernicious invasive purple loosestrife has also been busy making seeds – their seed heads are growing riper\, but we still have time to hunt them down\, clip and bag them before they do any more damage. \nCome one\, come all! \nWe’ll meet at 9am at the end of Palmer Drive in the Village of Lakewood\, and work until around 12pm. If you’re thinking of coming\, please RSVP to this email. \nWear sturdy\, waterproof boots\, bring plenty of water and a snack. \n\n\n\nRSVP to kishfenfriends@gmail.com if you would like to attend.

SUMMARY:Crowley Oaks Restoration Workday
DESCRIPTION:Join Larry for another restoration adventure at Crowley Oak Woods! Restoration has been occurring on this 80 acre tract since the winter of 2020 and we’re making excellent progress clearing the brush from the highest quality areas of the preserve. We conducted our first prescribed burn here this spring and the ground layer has responded in a really positive way! We’ll be cutting mainly honeysuckle and buckthorn and selectively thinning cherry trees and shagbark hickories to allow more light to reach the understory and encourage native plants and new oaks to grow.\n\nDirections: From the intersection of 173 and 14 in Harvard\, head east on 173 and continue for 3.2 miles. Turn left (west) on Crowley Road\, and continue for 0.2 miles. The site will be to the north\, and you may park along the road. If you’ve got a rugged vehicle\, feel free to drive back on the lane but stop at the end of the lane if ground conditions are moist.\n\nNearest address: 18725 Crowley Rd. SUMMARY:Final Friday Workday - Lake in the HIlls
DESCRIPTION:Join Kim for a Final Friday at the Wilson Conservation Easement! The Easement covers 0.69 acres and features a remnant oak woodland. Prior to urban development\, the area surrounding the Easement was an oak woodland. The Wilson Easement lies within a vast network of protected land including the Lake in the Hills Fen\, the Prairie Trail South and about a dozen municipal parks. The Wilson C.E. is a high quality natural area\, containing primarily native plant species such as cut leaved toothwort\, Dutchman’s breeches\, sedges\, trillium\, Jack-in-the-pulpit and horse gentian. Native animal species that utilize the conservation easement include chipmunk\, downy woodpecker\, warblers\, great blue heron and red-headed woodpeckers. The main task for today will be to clean up some large fallen trees and clear honeysuckle. \nThere is room in the driveway for a couple of cars; once that is full we can park on the street. \nPin: https://maps.app.goo.gl/oxDViKELcWEb9kcz8

DESCRIPTION:Illinois FarmLink and the Center for Agrarian Learning are teaming up to offer a FREE Land Access 101 workshop before Common Ground. If you’re a farmer looking to learn more about the basics of land access\, we invite you to join us in-person for this morning workshop. SUMMARY:Common Ground Gathering
DESCRIPTION:As the seasons transition\, each of us is looking forward to those fall and winter months where we’ll have more time on our hands. If you’re a farmer or landowner\, that’s an ideal time to revisit the land or farmer search and start to take steps toward changes you’d like to make. \nIf you’ve been looking for an opportunity to reflect\, brainstorm and meet with other farmers and landowners\, then look no further. Tickets are on sale now for the 6th annual Northern Illinois Common Ground gathering! \nCommon Ground is an in-person social and educational event for those who have pressing needs around land access. \n“Farmland owners and farmers can partner together in ways that are profitable\, good for the land\, and good for the community\,” says Linda Balek of The Land Conservancy of McHenry County\, one of the northern Illinois organizing partners. “But first they have to find each other and talk. That’s what this event is all about.” \nThe event will be hosted at Duke’s Alehouse and Kitchen in Crystal Lake\, a restaurant known for supporting small-scale\, local growers and for its excellent selection of craft beers. Doors open at 1:30 and the event will begin at 2:00. \n“Common Ground is a unique event because as much as it is about sharing information and resources to break down the complicated topic of land access\, it is equally about sharing stories and encouragement\,” says Illinois FarmLink’s Jeanne Janson. \nThe day will start off with land access stories from local farmers and landowners. Afterward\, all are invited to share their own story in the popular lightning round session. There will also be plenty of time to browse resources from local support organizations dedicated to helping land seekers and landowners. \nThe 2024 Northern Illinois Common Ground gathering is being organized by Farmers Rising\, McHenry County College’s Center for Agrarian Learning\, The Land Conservancy of McHenry County\, The Land Connection’s Illinois FarmLink program\, and Northern Illinois Young Farmers. \nPlease contact Jeanne Janson (Illinois FarmLink) at jeanne@thelandconnection.org  or (217) 840-2128 ext. 735 with any questions!

SUMMARY:Cancelled - Donato Woods Restoration Workday
DESCRIPTION:Cancelled due to the cold weather forecast for tomorrow! \nJoin us for a brush clearing bash at one of Woodstock’s many beautiful natural areas! This is a special little spot in the heart of Woodstock\, though few people know about its botanical treasures. This site is looking great but there is still some brush to clear at the south end. If you get there after the crew has left the parking area head in through the entrance off of Ridgeland Rd. and follow the trail to the left. Keep going and listen for the sound of chainsaws. \nPin: https://maps.app.goo.gl/JEZVhVB2NqgTDHTg6

SUMMARY:Boloria Meadows Restoration Workday
DESCRIPTION:This workday meets on the second Saturday of the month. Dennis Dreher is our dedicated steward leading these workdays and has been helping to breathe life back into this incredible site since 2006. Just when we thought we were running out of brush to clear we recently added another 15 acres of beautiful oak woodland that connects the site to Ridge road! Within the tangles of bittersweet\, buckthorn and honeysuckle\, a valuable ecosystem is in need of the sweet relief that only a skilled sawyer with a chainsaw can provide. Come give Dennis a hand recovering the dormant beauty from under the brush and check out all of the wonderful features this new addition to the site has to offer! \nWe’re working on a new parking area but it’s not quite finished yet so please continue to meet at the address above for now.

SUMMARY:Final Friday Restoration Workday
DESCRIPTION:The main goal of this project will be to ensure the continued establishment of native vegetation\, improve the water quality of the downstream areas\, and to prevent soil erosion and sedimentation of wetland and buffer areas.  Remnant and restored ecosystems are present on this property\, but the encroachment of invasive\, primarily non-native plant species threaten to replace native plant communities. Removing these invasive species will allow native ecosystems to establish themselves\, creating habitat for high-quality plants and animals. The strategic direction will be to restore woodland\, savanna\, prairie\, and wetland communities in a sustainable and achievable way throughout the future. The specific task for this workday will be to removing cotton woods from the berm to make future management easier. We’ll gather at Monica Lane and walk over to the berm together. \nPin: https://maps.app.goo.gl/QhK355xC3VqUfoTF6

SUMMARY:New Year’s Eve Oak Rescue
DESCRIPTION:Get your New Year’s Eve off to a great start by helping out at an oak rescue in beautiful McHenry County\, where we will work to rescue a mighty oak tree! \nWhat is an oak rescue? It’s an opportunity for people to work together to free an old oak tree from the brush that surrounds it. Some people cut the brush with saws while others stack the brush into piles that we burn to keep warm. It’s a few hours of work that is gratifying because the big old oak is left in a healthier state … free to breathe and reach out its branches. And its acorns are able to grow into big old oaks. \nCome enjoy the winter air and the warm feeling of doing something good for the McHenry County landscape! Afterward your hard work will be rewarded with a lunch of brats and hot dogs. Feel free to bring a dish to pass if you like. \nPlease register if you are planning to attend\, so we can be sure to have enough food. However\, last-minute volunteers are welcome to attend.\nRegistration opens soon!
