Queen Anne Prairie Cemetery Restoration Workday
May 16 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Join TLC for our first restoration workday at one of our newest sites, Queen Anne Prairie Cemetery! TLC recently acquired this property which has a lot of facinating history attached to it. Be sure to check out the article in our latest newsletter for the details! Designated a burial site over one hundred years ago, this site remains largely undisturbed and is epecially significant due to its remnant plant communities and the intact condition of the plant soil microbiome. However, like many before it, this tiny slice of original Illinois prairie experienced heavy enchroachment from several invasive species. Many years ago some native sumac was planted with good intentions but its aggressive nature allowed it to completely take over and now shades out much of the sun loving plant species persisting here.
For this workday we’ll focus on removing sumac, clearing the edges of fallen trees and hauling the debris to a burn pile.
Directions: From the intersection of route 47 and Charles Rd. head east on Charles Rd. and continue for 0.7 miles. At the traffic circle, take the 2nd exit to continue on Charles Rd. Continue for 0.7 miles and turn left onto Queen Anne Rd. Continue for 0.3 miles and you’ll see Queen Anne Prairie Cemetery on your left. Continue past the cemetery taking a right onto Pheasant Ln. Pull off to the side of the road to park and walk over to the cemetery.
