Community Research Forest Restoration Workday

This woodland is a TLC conservation easement that shares a border with a site belonging to our friends at McHenry County Conservation District. We’ve been doing prescribed fires here since 2012 and working to remove invasive brush since 2014 ,but there is much work to be done. We’ll be focusing on the fence row removing any brush and siberian elm, as well as some thinning of cherry and basswood. We burned this site earlier this year so it will be very interesting to see how things are coming along!
Directions: From highway 14, 4 miles south of Harvard or 7 miles north of Woodstock, head west on Lembcke Rd for 1.3 miles. Park along the north side of the road.

Volunteers assist with cutting, stacking and burning invasive brush to allow native trees and plants to grow!
Please bring a pair of work gloves if you have them and wear sturdy boots or shoes as well as old clothing (may get burn holes). Tools will be provided.
This workday will requires lots of walking over even terrain.

The Community Research Forest is just southwest of Harvard in Dunham Township. It was one of the largest remaining unprotected oak woodlands in the county when it was preserved as a joint project between The Land Conservancy (a nonprofit) and the McHenry County Conservation District (a government agency).
This landscape features towering white, bur, and red oaks on rolling forest topography with intermittent streams. Many woodland wildflowers still thrive in the understory, including trillium, bloodroot, shooting star, and indian pipe. Like many of our natural areas, this woodland is filling in with invasive brush originally from Eurasia which pushes out the native species that should be found here. Workdays will focus on removing the brush and restoring the natural structure of the woods.
