Lessons I’ve Learned from Nature
by Emily Ptaszek, TLC’s Marketing & Communications Intern
During my time interning with TLC, I have taken a lot of lessons with me. Not only from the people I have met, but also from the land itself. Getting in touch with these roots can help remind us of some important things.
1. It’s difficult to be patient
I used to consider myself somewhat of a patient person, but I think it can always be practiced and improved. As I gaze out on a landscape that needs a lot of work done, it can sometimes feel insurmountable. However, taking a closer look can help to reframe it. The flowers slowly dry to drop their seeds, making sure everything is perfect before they are ready to let go. There is no way to rush this process, and no need to hurry. Nature takes its time!
2. Not everything is in your control
The other day, I was attempting a prescribed burn on one of TLC’s easements. As I tried igniting the woodlands, it became clear that conditions were not on our side that day. Wind, humidity and so many other factors come into play. There are so many times that I’ve had to change plans and concede to nature, but that’s okay! Learning to adapt and find alternatives without stressing is a skill everyone should practice!
3. The importance of neighbors
Seeing a litter of hickory nut pods, I am reminded of the family of squirrels who must have been here this morning. Their environment has everything they need. Nature can remind us to lean on one another, and about the balance of giving and receiving. Everyone belongs, and everyone has their role.
