Meet TLC Member Mary Krupka

How did you find out about The Land Conservancy of McHenry County? 

I made the big move out to Cary from Wrigleyville in 2023 and was eager to start learning how to restore my small acreage from lawn to native landscaping. I already had an incredible resource in my Madison-based brother-in-law, Frank, owner of Red Head Ecological Consulting. But with him living a few hours north, I was looking for more local support and quickly found TLC.

Why did you decide to become a member of TLC? 

TLC is an organization that I want to see grow and thrive—making this small contribution is the least I can do to help keep prairie and woodland restoration at the forefront of local community programming. Early access to the plant sales is a big bonus too!

What would you tell someone who is thinking about joining TLC?

Whatever your purpose may be for joining, you really can’t go wrong. TLC is a great option for anyone seeking volunteer opportunities, structured outdoor activities, guidance for your own property, or a community of like-minded peers. And if none of that fits—at the risk of sounding cheesy—membership is something that will positively impact generations to come simply by supporting TLC.

Is there anything else you would like to share? 

For newbies (like me!), the multi-year lawn-to-prairie process may seem daunting. But take it from one impatient person to another—as we enter another springtime—the payoff of doing it right is super worth it!
